A Day at Grace

Discover the gentle rhythm of learning, exploration, and community that makes each day at Grace special.

A Glimpse into Our Day

Dr. Maria Montessori recognized early childhood as a foundational period of development, during which children possess a remarkable capacity to absorb information, develop independence, and build the skills that shape their future learning. At Grace Montessori School, we honor this important stage by providing a thoughtfully prepared environment where children learn through hands-on exploration, purposeful work, and meaningful experiences. Following an individual lesson presented by a Montessori guide, children are encouraged to engage in concrete materials independently, allowing them to discover concepts, and strengthen their understanding. Through purposeful exploration, repetition, and independent practice, children deepen their understanding of concepts while cultivating concentration, problem-solving skills, and the academic foundations needed for future learning.

Yet, the Montessori philosophy was never intended to focus on academics alone. Its greater purpose is to educate the whole child, recognizing that intellectual growth is most meaningful when accompanied by the development of character, independence, emotional well-being, and a sense of belonging. At Grace, we strive to cultivate an environment where children feel valued, develop a positive self-image, discover their individual potential, and learn to approach others and their surroundings with kindness and respect. Guided by our Christian faith, we encourage children to grow not only in knowledge, but also in grace, compassion, and appreciation.

With these principles guiding our work, our days are thoughtfully structured to balance purposeful Montessori work, meaningful social interactions, outdoor discovery, and opportunities for personal growth. Following an academic school year from August through May, with optional summer enrichment programs available during June and July, our guides provide intentional support for each child's development at their own pace. Every part of our day serves a purpose: to nurture capable, confident, and compassionate children who are prepared not only for their next academic chapter, but for life itself.

Here is what a typical day at Grace Montessori School looks like.

7:30-8:00: Early Morning Care (Optional)

A peaceful start to the day, allowing children to ease into their morning at their own pace. During this quiet time, children may choose from familiar early works and simple activities that encourage independence, help them settle into the classroom, and prepare them for the day ahead.

8:00-8:30: Morning Drop Off

Children gradually arrive as the classroom slowly comes to life. During this transition, children participate in caring for their environment by watering plants, tending to classroom pets, and restoring clean, folded items such as towels to their proper place. These simple, purposeful routines nurture responsibility, independence, and a sense of belonging within their classroom community.

8:30-8:50: Community Circle

Our community circle brings the class together for a shared moment of connection, and learning. We begin with good morning songs, followed by a discussion of the calendar and weather to help children develop an awareness of time, seasons, and the world around them. This gathering also provides an opportunity for the Guide to present group lessons in areas such as culture, art, and Bible, nurturing curiosity, a sense of community, and a deeper appreciation for God's creation. Through these shared experiences, children practice listening, communication, and respect for one another as valued members of their classroom community.

8:50-11:00: Work Cycle & Morning Snack

The uninterrupted work cycle is the heart of our Montessori morning, providing children with the time and freedom to follow their natural drive to learn. Following individualized presentations from the Guide, children are invited to select work from the prepared environment according to their interests, developmental readiness, and individual progression. Our Guides observes each child closely, offering new lessons when appropriate while allowing space for independent exploration, repetition, and mastery.

Snack is approached as an opportunity for independence, as children are encouraged to recognize their own hunger cues and choose when their bodies are ready for nourishment. Through this carefully balanced freedom within limits, children gradually develop self-discipline, responsibility, and trust in their own abilities.

11:00-11:45: Outdoor Time

The prepared environment extends beyond the classroom into the outdoors, where movement, exploration, and connection with nature become an essential part of the learning experience. Outdoor time also encourages communication, cooperation, and social development as children navigate shared spaces, engage with their peers, and discover the world around them.

11:45-12:30: Lunch

Mealtimes are an extension of the Montessori prepared environment, offering meaningful opportunities to practice independence, grace and courtesy, and care for others. Children take an active role in preparing the dining space by setting placemats, plates, and napkins for their classmates, arranging utensils, and pouring their own milk or water. As children gather to share a meal, they practice grace and courtesy through table manners, thoughtful conversation, and consideration for others. Through these shared experiences, children learn that caring for themselves also means caring for their environment and the people around them.

12:30-2:00: Rest (Older children continue work cycle)

The afternoon honors the individual rhythms and developmental needs of each child within our mixed-age community by allowing younger children, ages 3–4, a quiet space to rest and recharge. During this time, our kindergarten leaders practice care of the environment by helping restore the lunch space, returning dishes to their designated places, and sweeping. Once the space is restored, leaders return to their chosen Montessori works in Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, and Cultural studies, continuing their learning in a calm, focused environment that respects the rest of their younger classmates.

2:00-2:15: Afternoon Snack & Classroom Restoration

Younger children are gently guided in restoring their rest environment by folding and putting away their mats and blankets. Meanwhile, our kindergarten leaders conclude their work cycle by completing their chosen activities and carefully returning each material to its designated place on the shelf, ensuring the prepared environment is ready for the following morning. Children then gather for an afternoon snack, enjoying a moment of nourishment and connection before transitioning into the final portion of their day.

2:15-3:00: Outdoor Time

This final portion of the day offers a gentle transition toward dismissal, allowing children to enjoy outdoor time, strengthen peer relationships, and prepare for a peaceful dismissal.

3:00-5:00: After School Care (Optional)

Our extended care program provides a gentle continuation of the school day, balancing outdoor exploration with relaxed, purposeful activities. Children enjoy additional time outdoors before returning to the classroom for the final 45 minutes, where they settle into a quieter rhythm through story time, construction materials such as LEGO, Magna-Tiles, building blocks, and small-group games. These experiences encourage imagination, cooperation, and problem-solving while honoring each child's need for connection, creativity, and a peaceful transition from school to home.
